Camping With An Infant
Camping with an infant can be a really great experience. It’s wonderful for the parents to be able to share something they love with their children while introducing their infant to the great outdoors. Camping with an infant however does require some extra planning and organization.
When camping with a baby, be sure to choose a campsite that you have visited many times before and that you know very well. Also make sure that the campsite is not too far from home should anything happen that calls for heading back. It’s a wise idea to try sleeping in a tent in your backyard before taking an infant camping. This will allow you plenty of time to figure out sleeping arrangements as well as let baby get used to sleeping in a tent.
Also try to plan a camping trip that is in the spring or fall when the temperatures aren’t as hot. It’s easy to add layers to a chilly baby but it’s hard to cool them down. When dressing a baby for camping, layering is the key. Don’t use one bulky sweater but maybe a t-shirt with a long fleece over that and a light jacket over the fleece. This will provide you with many options for arranging the baby’s clothes while the temperature fluctuates. Also bring clothes that have snap closures. This will make diaper changing much easier as you won’t have to completely undress the baby. Remember to bring thick hats, socks, and mittens. Even if you’re not that cold, baby might be especially once the sun goes down.
Arrive at the site early so it gives you plenty of time to unpack, set up and relax. A portable playpen is a must to have around the campsite when camping with an infant. This allows the baby to enjoy the surroundings without being in any danger. Playpens also make for a great sleeping spot for baby. Make sure to buy a mosquito net that can be placed over the playpen. Also remember to bring a tarp that everyone can spend the day under should it rain.
A baby backpack is another great idea when camping with an infant. This can not only keep baby safe and near you when you are around camp but is also a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy a small hike. These are truly great memories so don’t forget to bring a camera!
When it’s time to put baby to bed, try to follow the same bedtime routine that is used at home. Put baby to bed at the same time, in a place that is away from the rest of the family to allow them to fall asleep easier. Line the bottom of the playpen with some blankets to help keep baby extra cozy and warm throughout the night. Also try to provide blankets that baby is familiar with. This will make it easier for the baby to fall asleep.
