Geocaching Games
Geocaching is a game that utilizes the technology of GPS tracking. Originally called GPSstashing, geocaching has long been a popular outdoor activity that caters to both outdoor lovers and geeks alike. Geocaching is the updated form of orienteering or even letterboxing and is basically a sophisticated treasure hunt game. Geocaching can involve any kind of treasure such as a small bottle with a slip of paper inside (microcache) to a large bucket with software, videos, costume jewelry and a ‘log book’ inside. Geocaching is a great way to get outdoors and have some fun and is suitable as a family day out. You can even create your own geocaching games and include some kind of fantastical story behind the hunt to excite your kids. Perhaps you are hunting for the lost log book of a pirate captain while staying at a seaside resort and the log book contains the location of the hidden pirate treasure.
Many people have long enjoyed geocaching as a general activity and is often a community based game. Participating in large community games means you do have certain rules to apply to. Participants may remove the treasure they find when geocaching but they have to replace it with something of higher or similar value in order to do so. This way everyone has a treasure to find when they get there. Participants of geocaching can also record the finding of the geocache in the log book or other paper/scroll that is kept with the treasure. Some geocaching communities have certain prizes included in the geocache so that the first finder can obtain an item that is special or of higher value as a reward for finding it first.
Geocaching is not limited to any one particular country; many geocaching communities have been created online with bases all around the world so that you can enjoy the great game that is geocaching wherever you are.
There are lots of different variations of this game from the traditional one stage geocaching game to a night cache which generally involves following reflectors. Some geocaching games are more complicated or difficult than others. This can either be because they are in a more difficult or hard to get to location or because they require some deciphering work to find the final geocache location. Before embarking on a geocaching adventure be sure to read the ethical search guidelines beforehand to avoid getting into any trouble. Many geocaching participants have been questioned by police in the past regarding suspicious behavior and some geocaches have even been destroyed by bomb squads because of spotted suspicious activity. The local government will no doubt also have their own guidelines for geocaching you should ensure you read up on first.
